Monique Wolf believes things happen for a reason, so when the mortgage company she worked for closed its doors, she decided to see it as an opportunity.
“It was either I could go right back into the workforce, or I could go to school,” she said. “It was an opportunity to try something different. It just all fell into place.”
Interested in healthcare, Wolf first looked at a radiology program from another school, but the enrollment process was long and complicated. That’s when she turned to Hawkeye Community College and learned about Respiratory Care. It’s a pivot she’s happy she made.
“I think this was like my calling,” she said. “I love it.”
Wolf qualified for the Pell Grant, and the Last-Dollar Scholarship helped her cover the rest of her tuition costs, allowing her to complete her degree without going into debt.
“You don’t have to take out student loans or things like that,” she said. “That is really helpful.”
When Wolf graduated in May 2022, she already had a job offer from MercyOne. She’s proud of what she’s accomplished, and has even inspired her daughter to look into a healthcare career.
