IOWA (KWWL) -- Senator Chuck Grassley has announced that there will be four Iowa community colleges that will receive a total of $509,775 in federal grants for their commercial driver's license (CDL) training programs.
The following community colleges will be awarded the grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation:
- $132,375 to Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo
- $131,000 to Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City
- $127,400 to Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny
- $119,000 to Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge
Senator Grassley said in a press release,
"Improving pathways for eligible individuals to secure commercial driver’s licenses is a simple way we can boost the economy. These resources will unlock good-paying jobs, address labor shortages in the trucking industry and streamline supply chain operations. I’ve seen firsthand the efficacy of commercial driver’s license programs in Iowa and am confident our community colleges will use this federal investment to build on their proven successes."
Senator Grassley had originally met with students who were pursing their commercial driving credentials at Hawkeye Community College in 2021. He was looking to strengthen Iowa's trucking workforce by encouraging the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to allow those who are 18-years-old or older to qualify for a CDL.
